EXTENDINGKNOWLEDGEProvidingSolutions35RELEVANCEResearchconductedbyRonnieJacksonCityofBryanYouthServicesCoordinatorsuggestedmorethan7000youthinBryandonothaveathomeadultsupervisionafterschoolandofthisgrouponlyapproximately1000arecurrentlyenrolledinafterschoolprograms.Thisstatisticcoupledwiththelinkbetweenunsupervisedafter-schooltimeandadolescentdeviancepresentsatroublingsituation.Fortunatelyresearchalsosuggestsyouthinvolvementinqualityafter-schoolprogrammingdecreasesexposuretoriskfactorsandpromotespositiveoutcomesincludingacademicperformanceincreasedphysicalactivitycivicengagementandincreasedself-condenceWittCaldwell2010.RESPONSETheYouthDevelopmentAfter-SchoolProgramLabYDPLmetimportanteducationalandprofessionaldevelopmentneedsforTexasAMstudentswhilebenetingthecommunityofBryanTX.TheT.E.A.MAfter-SchoolprogramranapilotprogramintheSpringof2013andserved6th-8thgradersatDavilaMiddleSchool.ThisprogramwasconductedMondayandWednesdayfor10weeksfrom330p.m.to630p.m.ThisprogramnotonlyservedtheabovementionedyouthaudiencesbutfacilitatedexperientiallearningforTexasAMYouthDevelopmentstudentsrelatedtotheimplementationofyouthprogramstheadministrationandfundingofyouthorganizationsthedirectinstructionalcontextsofindividualstudentsandsmallgroupsandtotheevaluationofandresearchinvolvingyouthprograms.RESULTSThepurposeofthisdatawastoassesstheimpactthattheactivitieshadonstudentsacrossmultipledomainsandinformfull-scaledevelopmentandimplementationoftheprogramforsemesterstocome.Domainsconsideredincludedstudentreportsofschoolbelongingandgradesaswellasschoolstaffreportsofstudentsacademicperformance.DavilaMiddleSchoolstudentswhoparticipatedintheevaluationofthisprojectwereraciallyandethnicallydiverse.Demographicinformationwasnotcollectedfromteachersorstaffparticipants.Howeverfollowingisabreakdownofbasicdemographicinformationaboutthestudentswhoparticipatedinthisevaluation.DavilaMiddleSchoolStudents20studentsintotalparticipated85werefemale15weremale40wereinthe6thgrade50wereinthe7thgrade10wereinthe8thgradeRacebreakdown50HispanicSummaryHighlightsProgramllsamuchneededvoidinoutofschooltimeprogramming.Studentsreportsindicateapositiveincreaseinacademicachievementandfeelingstowardsimportanceofacademicsconnectednessandotherlifeskills.Thoseininstructorrolesexpresspositivethoughtsonprogramsandwishtocontinueprogramming.DavilaAfter-SchoolProgram
